A second MAGIC-type telescope, under construction

The MAGIC Collaboration has decided to build (2006 - 2007) a second telescope, on the same site on La Palma, at 85m distance from MAGIC. You may look at the plan and some recent photos. The foundation and structure are in place, work on all other components (mirrors, camera, data acquisition, etc.) is in progress.

MAGIC-II, in principle, should as closely as possible resemble MAGIC-I, but new technologies and experience with MAGIC-I suggest changes in several areas, all aiming at the best possible performance for low-energy showers with their modest photon yield:
- advanced photosensors with higher sensitivity
- increased camera area instrumented homogeneously with small-size pixels
- mirror elements with larger surface (the total mirror area will remain the same)
- improved non-interfering mirror adjustment
- digital signal readout with improved time resolution

The initial camera of MAGIC-II will use improved PMTs (Hamamatsu R10408), of a quantum efficiency (QE) around 35%. The camera will be round with 1039 PMTs of 1" (0.1 degree) diameter, see the drawing, with trigger zones. For future photon sensors, industrial offerings are still under test: hybrid photon detectors (HPDs) with a GaAsP photocathode, as shown on the photo to the right, have already shown good results. In addition, Silicon PMTs (also called Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes) are in a longer-term development phase. The QE of these advanced photon sensors can be expected to reach 50%. In a first upgrade, the inner part of the camera will most likely be equipped with HPDs.

Mirrors will be square, 1 x 1 meter, obviating local assembley for modules. Higher-frequency digitizing is now offered commercially, permitting better time resolution of signals. The solution for MAGIC-II is based on the DRS Domino chip (see S.Ritt, NIM A 518, 470 (2004))
